Akwa United defeat Niger Tornadoes at Agege Stadium by sudden death penalty kicks to win the oldest cup competition in the country. The feat matches the team’s success two years ago, as they have become the first winners of the competition since its change of name to AITEO Cup.
The match well attended by state dignitaries and fans started with a lack of entertainment, as the teams felt each other out. The game finished scoreless at full-time with very few chances requiring penalty spot kicks to determine an eventual winner.
After 10 kicks by each team, Okechukwu Gabriel delivered the winning spot kick sending his effort beyond goalkeeper Mustapha Aliko in goal for the Tornadoes.
The win qualifies Akwa United to next season’s CAF Confederations Cup competition. The team have taken home ₦25m in prize money as well as winners trophy. The Tornadoes went home with ₦10m for their efforts.
