Nigerian-American MMA fighter Kamaru Usman declares he is a problem to the entire MMA Welterweight division. Usman’s not so humble post-fight interview video is currently trending as he calls out former lightweight champion Rafael Dos Anjos (RDA), who is currently ranked fifth in the welterweight division.
Usman known as the Nigerian Nightmare knocked out Sergio Moraes in the first round of their MMA match up which took place on Saturday September 16th in Pittsburg, Pennsylvania. Usman’s last four fights ended by judge’s decision hence his game plan was to knockout Moraes and remind matchmakers why he deserves a top five ranked opponent next.
In the same post-fight interview, Usman ditches his American accent and breaks into pidgin with the popular “Naija no dey carry last” slogan. Usman who is clearly proud of his roots made his entrance to the octagon with music by Olamide.
Born in Benin City, Nigeria, Usman and his family moved to the United States when he was 5-years-old. He gathered an impressive record in high school wrestling and qualified for the NAIA national meet at William Penn University.
In college, Usman transferred to the University of Nebraska at Kearney where he earned the NCAA Division II All-American honors all three years he attended and helped the school win its first-ever overall team title in 2008. Usman also won the 2010 NCAA Division II national title at 174 lbs. in his senior season was a member of the University World Team for wrestling in 2010.
Usman made his professional MMA debut in November 2012. In February 2015, Usman was announced as one of the fighters selected to be on Season 21 of The Ultimate Fighter dubbed American Top Team vs. Blackzilians.
On the show, Usman faced fighters including the former WSOF World WW Champion Steve Carl making it all the way to the finals where he faced Hayder Hassan in the finals on July 12, 2015. He won defeated Hassan a personal rival throughout the show via submission in the second round and was awarded a Performance of the Night bonus.
